Eight Locations Identified For Possible Site Of Malaysia's First Nuclear Plant

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- The government has identified eight locations in Peninsular Malaysia for the construction of the country's first nuclear power plant which is expected to be operational by 2021.

Malaysian Nuclear Agency director-general Datuk Dr Daud Mohamad said a study was being carried out to select the most suitable location for the purpose.

"Among the criteria which a location should have to make it a suitable site for the construction of the nuclear power plant is that it should be near a water source, with hard rock terrain and not in a flood-prone area.

"All these criteria have to be looked into before making any decision. If there are people staying in the selected area, they have to be moved out, while for an area which has been developed, we have to relocate, but the cost is very high.

"Whatever the decision, it will be made by the government and is expected in 2012," he told reporters after opening a symposium on quality management here Wednesday.

On the safety aspect of the nuclear power plant, Dr Daud said there was no need for Malaysians to worry, adding that programmes would be carried out by the agency to explain to the people the pros and cons of the project.

He also welcomed suggestions and views from non-governmental organisations, as well as politicians, including from the opposition parties, and the private sector on the construction of the nuclear plant.

  2. Darshan.. its said already in penisular malaysia.. how can it be in sabah or sarawak.

    no offence.. tq

my guess would be... in johor or pahang.
coz of, both are near the sea, and the location would be near the south-china sea. selat melaka is too busy with all the ships, so no way around selangor, melaka and negeri sembilan, penang, kedah and perlis. kelantan, of coz they would not accept the program, terengganu is full with oil platform. therefore my guess would be johor or pahang. maybe near mersing.

  3. (Among the criteria which a location should have to make it a suitable site for the construction of the nuclear power plant is that it should be near a water source, with hard rock terrain and not in a flood-prone area.) why they need to buil near the water source, with hard rock terrain and not in a flood-prone area????

    - most of power plant(not only nuclear power plant) are built near the lakes, river or sea...this is for cooling purpose, as power plants will release the excessive heat from the system to operate at the most optimum level...

    - the purpose of hard rock terrain is to minimize seismic shaking or in a simple word,earthquake...if you built your reactor in soft soils or sediment of course the effect of earthquake will be terrible...

    - for the third one, i think almost everyone hate to live in flood-prone area...in the case of any type of power plant, it is not a wise idea to build it in this area...we need electricity 24hrs/day...can you imagine if a power plant has to be shut down every time there is a flood???

  5. As we know the power plants will release the excessive heat from the system to the near water source to operate at the most optimum level. From what i know the water source had a very high heat capacity and will not get effected. But thinking about it for a long term ,will it not effect the system even by a small percentage.VIMALAN A/l GENASAN vimalan_12@yahoo.com
