5 Oct Class Summary

Salam...
We're back!!
ok, from yesterday class....
it is....
XENON POISONING???

Some of the drivers will start cursing when a car with cheap xenon lights poisoned their view….ouchhhh~
What is actually poisoning in nuclear engineering???
Maybe this one is already explained in previous post, so let’s refresh our minds =) poison is a substance with the great ability to absorb neutrons. Let say that neutrons acts like the fuel in our car. If the fuel becomes less then finish???Of course our car engine will stop running. Same as in the nuclear reactor, when neutrons are absorbed the reactor will shutdown.

What is Xenon-135?

Xenon-135 is the most common and bothersome poisons found in nuclear reactors. It can be produced as a byproduct of radioactive decay chain of Iodine-135 or as a fission product during reactor operation. Xenon-135 can be removed by radioactive decay and by neutron absorption to become Xenon-136 (burnout) which is a weaker neutron absorber.

How does Xenon-135 influence the reactor??

When power rapidly decreases in the reactor, the rate of Xenon-135 burnout will drop. However Iodine-135 continues to decay, producing more Xenon-135. Xenon-135 amount will increase, and then will absorbed available neutrons down thus lowering power. After a few hours, as Iodine-135 production slows the Xenon-135 levels reduced and power rises again.

Vice versa when power is rapidly increased, the rate of Xenon-135 burnout rises suddenly but the Iodine-135 decay remains unchanged. Xenon-135 will have lower concentration and there will be increase in power. Eventually the rate of Iodine-135 production and decay along with the rate of Xenon-135 production and burnout reach equilibrium ,will caused power to be lower.

Solution??
  • Reduce control rod use to increase neutrons
  • Withdraw compensate fuel burn up
  • Limit the rate of a plant raises or lowers the power
  • Inject/dilute soluble poisons to match power level

  1. hello..

    nice post..^^
now i can understand a little bit about nuclear poison even i still not understand how nuclear energy generated.

but i'm very confused how xenon-135 can influence the reactor. As u said,iodine-135 will producing xenon-135 when decay, that means amount of iodine-135 always decrease and xenon-135 will always increase, cause low power.
so, how iodine-135 can slow the production of xenon-135?
    how to burnout xenon-135?

hopefully u can answer my question since i'm not familiar with nuclear therms..tq..@_@

  3. Excuse me?
    # Reduce control rod use to increase neutrons
    # Withdraw compensate fuel burn up
    # Limit the rate of a plant raises or lowers the power
    # Inject soluble poisons to match power level
i dont understand how those thing can help rhe power tobe lower??
may be im not familliar with those term u use..
hope u can help me xplain how does these works towards xenon.

  4. hmm,i'm not really clear about xenon-135,is it harmful to human,or is that any other radioactive which is more stable to be used in this process. But i have made a research on this,XE-135,gives out strong radiation that may kill our human body cells in long term intervals,so is that any other way to overcome this

  5. I have read about nuclear poisoning earlier in another blog, but only roughly. From what I read, xenon-135 absorb neutrons and causing power generated decreases. If there is a lot of xenon-135 is used whether it can cause the power generated in the nuclear chain stopped?

  6. @danial

    hi danial.

Xenon-135 is a product of Iodine-135 decay. It means that when Iodine-135 decays it will produce Xenon-135, as the process happens the amount of Iodine-135 will be reduced while the amount of Xenon-135 will increases. So, less Xenon-135 will be produced as the amount of Iodine-135 had become less.

To answer why the power level is low, Xenon-135 is a neutron poison (neutron absorber). When the certain amount of neutron is absorbed, of course the amount of neutron left for nuclear reaction becomes less. So, it will sure effect the efficiency of the reactor.

On how to burnout Xenon-135, burnout is a process when Xenon-135 absorbs neutron to become Xe-136.I just edited the post.

    Thanks for your feedback.

    @Mohd Syukri

Thanks Sir for your feedback. We had explain on nuclear power/energy in our previous posts. Maybe we should explain more in details.Thank you.

  7. Hello,
Yeah I have read about Xenon-135 being a nuclear poison is another blog. However , I am not clear on -(Inject/dilute soluble poisons to match power level)---What does this mean?

And besides Xenon-135, what other poisons are there, that tend to absorb the neutrons and casue the reactor to shut down?

    Thank You.
p:S-The article should be more precise and clear, the grammar is bad, thus a bit hard to understand

  8. hye..ive read the article and from what i understand, the radioactivity cannot be eliminated at 100%..as xenon-135 radiation can kill our body cells, what will happen or rather how worse can it be to our health if this radiation cant be controlled.

  9. "After a few hours, as Iodine-135 production slows the Xenon-135 levels reduced and power rises again."

Does this mean that the power generated by these nuclear generators is not constant? If so, will this problem be overcome by the solutions you provided?

  10. thank you for the information about the 'nuclear poison'.And the explanation is simple and easy to understand. But can you please explain the solution to prevent the xenon-135 from being uncontrollable?Of course we dont want the history to be repeated(Chernobyl.
And thank you again for your answer.

    hai
thanks for the info.from the above statement basically what i can conclude is the poison will absorbed the neutron and it result in the shut down of the reactor as it cant perform without the neutron. So my question is can we make use of this poison ability indirectly to shut down the reactor as a precaution in case of emergency( let say in a out of control situation. thanks

  12. hye...
As we all know Xenon normally is a colorless gas,and it will emits a glow when excited by an electrical discharge.
From your post, i just know that Xenon-135 is the most common and bothersome poisons found in nuclear reactors.
"Limit the rate of a plant raises or lowers the power"..can you explain more briefly and give some ways how to limit the rises of the plants. Besides, can you explain how it works towards this gas.

  15. "Does this mean that the power generated by these nuclear generators is not constant?"

As what i understand, control rod function is to control the rate of power generated thus providing constant power supply.

  16. Hye there.
I would be very grateful if you could provide an equation, a simple one showing the reactions occur in a particular reactor. Based on my limited knowledge on nuclear reactor, there are plutonium and uranium.
This leads to my question; does Iodine- 135 involved in a reaction of uranium that leads to the existence of poisons in a reactor OR separate setups have to be set up to produce Iodine- 135

  17. Xenon poisoning..hmm..
    Can it cause a "disaster".
    Then actually,YES it can!

A major contribution to the sequence of events leading to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster was the failure to anticipate the effect of "xenon poisoning" on the rate of the nuclear fission reaction in the Chernobyl nuclear reactor.

This leads to a statement,'Nuclear = Disaster",which is true if it does not well-practiced.

  21. OMG! I don't even know this kind of thing happens in a plant(or whatever you call that). Good information on the poison/function of Xenon-135. This is some basic facts and information every engineer should know. Although some of us maybe won't be joining this field, it is always good to know this kind of things. In the future, surely Malaysia will be using nuclear power plant to generate electricity. 1 question. Wouldn't it be dangerous or not effective if you use less control rods? I always think that it is quite important to have sufficient control rods in the plant.

  22. How do you control the usage of the poison (Xenon-135)? And adding to Aplox comment the control rods are normally used in the power plant together with the moderator. And how is reducing the control rod is gonna help solve the problem?
