Neutron moderator, nuclear reactor coolant and control rods

Yo peeps (notice my ‘Mat Salleh’ wannabe?). How y’all doing? (from Memphis apparently). Alright, let’s cut to the chase. For this third entry, we will talk about neutron moderator, nuclear reactor coolant and control rods.

Before we go any further, let’s take a ride on some nuclear lesson shall we? First off, what exactly is a nuclear reactor?

Nuclear Reactor:

·         A device to initiate and control a continuous nuclear chain reaction−splitting of the nucleus of an atom into smaller parts often producing free neutrons and photons (fission) of heavy isotopes like 235U−that releases several million times more energy per reaction.

·         It converts the thermal energy released from nuclear fission to boil water, producing pressurized steam which will then drive a steam turbine that generates electricity (just like conventional fossil fuels power stations).

·         It has undergone many revolution and currently, the Generation III is in operation and development like AP-1000(a 2-loop pressurized water reactor (PWR)),EPR(a  4-loop PWR), ATMEA-1(a 3-loop PWR)and many more.

Well then, enough of this confusion and let’s move on to the next puzzlement of the day, neutron moderator. Whenever nuclear fission occurs, neutrons that are normally bounded into an atomic nucleus are freed with energies of several MeV (mega electron volt).

TNB Ready To Undertake Malaysia's First Nuclear Power Plant
September 22, 2010 19:32 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is ready to undertake the country's first nuclear power plant but needs the public to understand the importance of having the plan to meet future demand for electricity.

"We are ready," TNB President and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said Wednesday.

Food for Thought...

"Almost every way we make electricity today, except for the emerging renewables and NUCLEAR, puts out CO2. And so, what we're going to have to do at a global scale, is create a new system. And so, we need energy miracles." - Bill Gates

Announcement!!!

Now we have a new look on our blog, since some our of friend comment on how it looks..
It seems to be quite dark, hardly to see the word. And as a result, we change the background so that its easier to see..
if you got any comment and idea, just give it to us, so that we can improve, don't hesitate. just tell us.. Ok! We need your feedback coz this really matter to us.

Hope u guys love this new design... Adios!

28 Sept Class Summary

Hi!... we're back, today is our 2nd entry...
Here we go..
Most people considered nuclear as a very hazardous thing as they always relate it to nuclear bombs that were dropped in Hiroshima or Nagasaki. Even some of our friends gave us negative feedback at our facebook accounts about using nuclear to generate electricity because they refer it to Chernobyl and Three Mile Island incident. Maybe some of them did not realize that time has moved forward and our technology has improved as time goes on??

NUCLEAR POWER FOR ALL

 Are you ready Malaysians???

27 Sept Class Summary

8.15 AM, August 6, 1945 and 11.01 AM, August 9, 1945. These are the times when “Little Boy” and “Fat Man” were dropped and mother Earth loses her children, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Fact 1: Hundreds of thousands of lives were lost.

Fact 2: Mankind is to blame.

Nuclear technology, like any other technology comes from ideas generated by human brains. How these brains decide of its usage is what determines which path it’s going to undertake. History remains, but not forever the same and instead of fearing, let us now benefit from it.
Electricity generated from a nuclear power plant can be used for so many goods. From ensuring a life-support machine operates in keeping an old life, to medical equipments needed in welcoming the birth of new ones.

So how does nuclear technology works?

Nuclear Related Event

Do you remember about the incident in Chernobyl power plant in Ukraine? The bombing of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki? I'm sure many of us remember about this event and some don't. Well let refresh your mind.

1st posting

salam..
dear all,

we are from welovenuclear admin would like to welcome all of you to this blog,
which this will be one of our way to promote the nuclear technology as a sufficient source of energy and we would be honor to change your perspective and mind about nuclear. After this, you will see nuclear as a need not a threat.
