28 Sept Class Summary

Hi!... we're back, today is our 2nd entry...
Here we go..
Most people considered nuclear as a very hazardous thing as they always relate it to nuclear bombs that were dropped in Hiroshima or Nagasaki. Even some of our friends gave us negative feedback at our facebook accounts about using nuclear to generate electricity because they refer it to Chernobyl and Three Mile Island incident. Maybe some of them did not realize that time has moved forward and our technology has improved as time goes on??
Run and run and run!!
The previous entry explained about how nuclear technology works and about reactivity. The word reactivity itself will make some of you scared =) Basically reactivity will changes when some physical properties of the material inside the reactor change. So, does this situation will cause effect such as the nuclear power plant incidents and the nuclear bombs in the future??? The answer is NO (God willing). Humans do learn from their mistakes and many steps have been taken to increase the safety of the reactor.
The reactor itself has the behavior of self-regulating called negative reactivity feedback. This behavior is achieved when the reactor is operated under moderated condition that created ‘passive safety’ as no action from operator is needed. Actually what this is all about??

  • Imagine that sudden power increase to reactor A which is under moderated, the moderator temperature increase while the density will decrease.(This is a very basic science…hope you guys understand…hehehe) The situation will cause neutron moderation and the negative reactivity to be generated as it will slowed down or halted the power increase.
  • For reactor B, it is in the over moderated region as the neutron is already at high thermalization level. The moderator temperature will increase and its density will decrease. However in this situation, the moderation will has almost no effect. The absorption of neutrons will also decrease hence increases the reactivity that will cause positive reactivity feedback effect and caused the incident in Chernobyl.
Chernobyl incident where its core melt and cause the explosion
  • God willing, such incidents will never happen again as the advanced reactors today have many up-to-date safety features and most the reactor has been designed to operate under moderated condition for negative reactivity feedback effect.

          Till next time =)
